Abstract

At present, not much is available in terms of an overview of the applied ethics subfield pharmaceutical ethics. However, due to its size, complexity, and importance for society, this field is wellsuited for instructive ethical reflections and discussion of moral questions by stakeholders in the pharmaceutical industry and in biotechnology. The aim of this research project is to further develop pharmaceutical ethics as a new area of ethics and to create a corresponding learning platform that will be available to all students and interested parties in chemistry, pharmacy, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical technology throughout Germany. Using the WAAGE-method and applying the principles of care ethics with its criteria of patient autonomy, non-maleficence, beneficence, and justice, the authors illustrate complex relationships and case studies in pharmaceutical ethics with a focus on the safety of the population's drug supply. Various options for action are reflected on in ethical terms and future solutions for independent production chains in Europe are emphasized. The research project “pharmaceutical ethics learning platform” is being funded by the German Chemical Industry Association (VCI).
